Ethiopia Safe Space Programme (ESSP)

Adolescent girls in Ethiopia face significant risks, including child marriage, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes. The programme supported girls aged 11-14 through safe spaces to build confidence, life skills, and health awareness, while developing a sustainable pathway for scale-up.

Co-Designing & Implementing the Safe Spaces Programme

Developing and delivering safe spaces for adolescent girls to strengthen confidence, life skills, and sexual and reproductive health awareness.

Supporting Programme Delivery & Graduation

Facilitating the successful graduation of 2,000 adolescent girls through structured learning and empowerment interventions.

Planning for Sustainable Scale-Up

Developing a five-year scale-up and handover plan to support the Ministry of Health in institutionalising and expanding the Safe Spaces programme.

Impact Metrics

2,000+ girls

Successfully supported through safe space sessions across Cohorts I and II.

80 safe spaces

Created for sessions attended by 1,714 girls and 362 boys.

Improved health awareness

Adolescent girls gained a better understanding of their health needs.
